The Day I Realized Shipping Isn't Finishing
Early in my career at Merlin AI, I shipped a feature called Prompt Enhancer. What happened next taught me that the craft isn't finished when you ship it—it's finished when someone else feels it.
Early in my career at Merlin AI, I shipped a feature called Prompt Enhancer, a button that rewrites your prompt in real-time, streaming the enhanced version directly into the input. I was proud of it.
The logic was clean. The streaming felt smooth. The UX felt tight.
I thought it was done.
Then our co-founder Endu, gave me the simplest advice I’ve ever received:
“Go sit with people in the office. One by one. Watch them use it.”
That was it. No dashboards. No analytics. No frameworks. Just, go watch.
So I did.
And what I saw broke almost every assumption I had.
The Invisibility Problem
Some people didn’t even notice the button existed. The feature I had spent hours building… was invisible.
I had to go back and make it pop, reposition it, add subtle motion, place it where the eye naturally lands while typing.
Because if no one sees it, it doesn’t exist.
The Hesitation
The ones who did find it? They hesitated. They didn’t fully understand why their prompt was changing. Some of them felt like the tool was “correcting” them.
And the streaming that felt elegant to me? To them, it felt chaotic.
That’s when something clicked for me.
Building something and experiencing something are two fundamentally different acts.
The Context Gap
As creators, we build with context. We know:
- why the feature exists
- what tradeoffs were made
- what edge cases were handled
- what problem we’re trying to solve
But the user? They meet it cold. No backstory. No context. No emotional attachment.
Just: a button and a feeling
And that feeling decides everything.
It’s like writing a song. The writer knows every chord change, every revision, every moment of doubt behind it. The listener doesn’t. They just know one thing:
Did it move me or not?
The Lesson
That day taught me something I still carry into every product I build:
The craft isn’t finished when you ship it. It’s finished when someone else feels it.
And honestly? Sitting silently and watching someone use what you built will teach you more than 10 product meetings ever will.
